Let's talk about retirement statistics - 8/16/2024

According to the Statista research site the average age of retirement in the United States was:

1900 76

1950 70

1980 64

2000 63

2020 60

The average life expectancy in those years was:

1900 46

1950 68

1980 73

2000 76

2020 79

This is not taking into account variances for education, wealth, gender, location (which state and rural vs. urban) so it is a rough average.

What does this mean? It means a lot of different things. The reality of these statistics can impact the money you need to save for your retirement, how long you should work before retiring, and the quality of your retirement among other things.
