According to the Statista research site the average age of retirement in the United States was:
1900 76
1950 70
1980 64
2000 63
2020 60
The average life expectancy in those years was:
1900 46
1950 68
1980 73
2000 76
2020 79
This is not taking into account variances for education, wealth, gender, location (which state and rural vs. urban) so it is a rough average.
What does this mean? It means a lot of different things. The reality of these statistics can impact the money you need to save for your retirement, how long you should work before retiring, and the quality of your retirement among other things.
