Surprise credit score! - 7/19/2024

I recently had a young friend buy a new-to-him car. This was the first car that he has bought that was new enough and nice enough to require getting a loan. He had no idea what his credit score was and had been concerned that it would get in the way of a car loan.

A pleasant surprise, a score of the mid-700's that he had no idea how that had happened. I was not as surprised since during conversations he had told me that he paid his credit card on time, even when it was only the minimum, and that he had some utility bills in his name that were also paid on time.

Credit scores are based on multiple factors.

  • Payment history - have you paid your credit in a timely manner

  • Amount owed - how much you owe compared to how much credit you have available

  • New credit - how frequently and recently you applied for credit

  • Length of credit history - how long you have had a credit history

  • Credit mix - revolving credit (credit cards) compared to installment credit (mortgage, car loan, student loan, etc.)

While he didn't have much of a history, nor was it long, he had shown responsibility with the credit that he had. It's nice when the credit score surprises are happy ones.

If you have a credit card, you may have easy access to view your credit score on a regular basis. While pleasant surprises are nice, I prefer not to have any surprises. It is worth the effort to know your credit score.
